The Peace Tree is a bronze statue by Gia Japaridae, an artist from the Republic of Georgia. Tbilisi, Georgia is one of Atlanta’s Sister Cities where Leslie Ennis with Project Peace Tree made the the contact with Gia when she visited there (artist Gia stands on left in blue suit jacket with his wife next to him – photo October 1989).
Set in ten acres of forest, this half-mile Swan Woods Trail leads past study stations explaining the ecosystems of the Georgia Piedmont. Vestiges of terraced agricultural fields abandoned a century ago are still visible, and sightings of birds and other wildlife reward the watchful. The Gardens for Peace trail segment and its Peace Tree statue both serve as reminders that people from all nations can join hands to further the cause of peace throughout the world.
